Located in equatorial Africa, Mount Kenya boasts the second highest point on the continent and stands at an impressive 5,199m (17,057ft) tall. The main peaks rise from about the 4,500m mark to the summit of Batian (5199m), Nelion (5188m) and Lenana (4985m) amongst others.

Joyvennture Safaris Limited has scheduled hikes all year long. It however advises visitors that the best time to attempt the climbing are from June to October and January to March.

Overview

Many experienced hikers report that they preferred Mount Kenya over Mt Kilimanjaro because of the thriving wildlife and idyllic mountain lakes it has to offer. It is also much more off-the-beaten path. With snow-covered peaks and panoramic views of its forested slopes and the surrounding African planes, hiking Mount Kenya promises the adventure of a lifetime.

Day 1 - International airport transfer
Upon landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you'll be picked up by Joyventure Safaris Limited private driver and transferred to your hotel. Nairobi is the largest city in Kenya, with over six million residents, and it was founded in the late 19th century by colonial authorities in British East Africa as a rail depot on the Uganda Railway. The name originated from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi (cold water), referring to the Nairobi River, which flows through the city.

The rest of the day is free time to explore any way you'd like. You might want to rest after the journey or visit some of the city's produce and flea markets. Cap off the day by eating a meal at an authentic Kenyan restaurant.
Day 2 - Base to Lake Ellis camp site
You will be picked from your hotel by our driver tour guide after breakfast, very early in the morning. This is so as to avoid the city jam. You'll ride for 175km or 109 miles to Mt Kenya National Park with lunch being served along the way. Have your camera close as you are en-route to Africa's second highest point.

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace . A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.

Day 3 - Lake Ellis to Minto's camp
Afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. An early night is recommended as you are attempting the summit next day.

Day 4 - Minto's to Lenanapeak
Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 03:00 am. We hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast.

After breakfast, begin a 5 hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp.

After early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours to the Sirimon Park gate to catch a vehicle and travel to Nairobi.

What is the best time to climb ?
January to March and June to October when there is less rain.
How cold is at the top?
At an altitude of 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) there is an 11.5 °C mean range in daily temperature, this goes down to 7.5 °C at 4,200 metres (13,800 ft) and 4 °C at 4,800 metres (15,700 ft).
Can you climb in a day?
All 21 pitches are done in one day, making this Mt Kenya summit not only a beautiful climb, but an exhausting one as well. This peak is best attempted in June through August. Taking a break on the route up Batian Peak, a significant rock climbing challenge.
